Grades 6–8

It’s in the Bag: Engineering Bioinspired Gear

Students explore features of living things and then design bioinspired bags or packs.

Grades 6–8

Plants to Plastics: Engineering Bioplastics

Students learn about bioplastics, a possible solution to the problem of plastics, then design their own bioplastics.

Grades 6–8

Put a Lid on It: Engineering Safety Helmets

Students learn how helmets protect the brain and design their own helmets to crash test.

Grades 6–8

Outbreak Alert!: Engineering a Pandemic Response

Students design a model antiviral to stop a newly discovered virus from infecting a model cell.

Retired Units

Retired Units are units for which the Materials Kit has been discontinued and is unavailable for purchase. Teacher Guides and media resources will continue to be digitally accessible free of charge.

Grades 6–8

Food for Thought: Engineering Ice Cream

Students create a step-by-step process for engineering their own ice cream.

Grades 6–8

It’s About Time: Engineering Timers

Students work as mechanical engineers as they design and build timers.

Standards Alignment

See how EiE connects to state and national standards.

We’ve developed each EiE Engineering unit with careful attention to educational standards in both science and technology/engineering. Computer Science units align with state and national computer science standards.

Engineering Everywhere Resources

EiE has worked closely with educators to develop a suite of resources for each unit. Engineering Notebooks and Family Letters are provided in both English and Spanish.

Resource Description
Educator Guide  Contains seven to nine 45-minute lessons. Each includes:

  • Educator Preview with background information, activity timing, key concepts, materials lists, and preparation.
  • An Activity Guide with step-by-step instructions for implementing the activity.
  • Discussion questions for learners to reflect on new ideas and share work with peers.
Engineering Notebook   Pages where learners record their findings and reflect on their learning.
Special Report Video  Video takes learners on a field trip to meet engineers who solves problems similar to the engineering challenge in the unit.
Alternate Prep Adventures  Alternate approaches for introducing the unit, for groups that complete multiple units in the series.
Video and Resource Links  Links to optional additional resources to enrich and extend learner understanding.
